A.P. Buunk was (nick name Bram), among others, from 1983-1984 a Fulbright Scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles, and in 2006 a Professor Erasmus Mundus at the University of Valencia, Spain. He was a assistant, and later associate, professor of social and organizational psychology and the University of Nijmegen, and frrom 1990 to 2012 professor of social psychology at the University of Groningen. From 2005 to 2012 he was Academy Professor on behalf of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences, and since 2004 he is a member of this Academy. Currently he is a Honorary Professor at the University of Groningen, and since 2013 a Professor of Social and Organizational Psychology at the University of Curaao. He is affiliated with the Universidad de Palermo, Buenos Aires, since 2006, and with the Universidad Católica del Uruguay, Montevideo, since 2008. In 2012 he was awarded the Distinction of Professor Honorario by the Universidad Catolica in Arequipa, Peru.

He has devoted much of his career to research on social exchange and social comparison in applied areas, including professional burnout, absentee­ism, AIDS-prevention, loneliness, depression, marital satisfaction, well-being among the elderly, and coping with cancer.

Currently, he is primarily interested in evolutionary approaches of human social behavior, including parental control of mate choice, intrasexual competition, jealousy and the relationship between physical and physiological characteristics on the one hand, and psychological characteristics on the other hand.

Prof. Buunk has over 575 scientific publications in a variety of journals and books, including the Evolutionary Psychology, Evolutionary Behaviorial Sciences, Hormomes and Behavior, Biological Psychology, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Psychological Science, Journal of Applied Psychology, Health Psychology, Patient Education and Counseling, Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Psychology and Aging, Evolution and Human Behavior, and the European Journal of Social Psychology.

He has completed thus far the supervision of 55 doctoral dissertations, and still supervises a number of dissertations. Several of these dissertations were or are written by people from a diversity of countries including Spain, Latvia, Canada, the United States, Costa Rica, Argentina and Uruguay. Prof. Buunk has held, and holds, many administrative positions. He was, among others, a vice-chair of the Program Committee on Succesful Aging, of the Nether­lands Organiza­ti­on for Scientific Research (NWO). He has also been a member of the Scientific Board for Social Oncology of the Dutch Cancer Foundation (NKB-KWF), of the Scientific Board of the Dutch AIDS Foundati­on, and of the Program Committee on Evolution and Behavior of NWO.

Prof. Buunk has a strong international orientation. He participated for example in the EU TEMPUS program with the Jagielonski University in Krakow, Poland, and gave lectures in many countries. He has collaborated, or still collaborates with colleagues from, among others, Spain, Uruguay, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Chile, Portugal, the United States, Costa Rica, Indonesia and Curacao.

He lives part of the time in Spain and Uruguay, where he is a resident, and spends his free time among others on running, playing conga's, and travelling. He plays in the Poco Loco Steelband. Recently he started taking singing lessons and singing in gospel choir. He is on behalf of the Bunno Mezclado Foundation involved in the production of several cd's. In 2016 the cd 'Steelin' pop' by Enrico Garcia and the Mezclados came out, on which prof. Buunk plays conga's and bongo's.

In 2009 he was awarded the Royal Distinction of Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw (Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion).
